I agree that it really depends on the project but I think media sites that
are doing more creative than they need to. They offen design entire sites
for clients instead of meeting the clients needs with respect to that media
outlet. To use a print analogy we get stuck designing the annual report
when all we wanted was an ad about next weeks daily specials. That maybe
oversimplified but that is the general idea. As the industry matures I
think you will find media sites designing "web ads" that are very targeted
to the audience of the site. That is supposed to be the beauty of the web.
Most online advertisers who have been there awhile are already hip to this
but this year has seen a greater interest in the general advertising
communities. It's not pretty but it is great for the industry. No one
likes designing the next grocery store flyer but it is the meat and
potatoes of the newspaper industry. And for that kind of immediate,
timely, focused information a week is about all you can take before the
inforamtion goes stale. For a full scale integrated ad campaign or
corporate site sure take the time. But for the daily specials get it in
and get it out there.
