Hey, why just pick on AOL, lets sue any company or ISP that is running a proxy
server. These things only have one role. To deprive you, the poor little
old website with ad dollars.

OK, I have heard this debate since AOL was 2.5 million subscribers big
(hmm, measuring time by rate of growth of AOL :-).

Sure, AOL caches stuff, sure so do many other ISP's and companies. One
major ISP in Canada as a test got 500 dial users to use a proxy server
for a month in one city and saved 30% bandwith on port 80 (standard web
port) compared to month before...

Now, imagine if these stats can be apllied to AOL and they did not cache.
Think, 30% more hits! 30% more impressions! 30% more traffic on the
backbone, backbone starts to overheat... b a c k b o n e g e t

You have a point, AOL should not cache the way its does. Way back in
inet-marketing list days I recall suggesting how to get around this. AOL
should report, in a public forum, gee, website is a novel idea, how many
pages served from how many site etc on a monthly basis.

You should not fight caching, caching is so net friendly I would rather
not think about a Internet without it...
