I quote from the end of this message, "I certainly wouldn't put with it without
a fight, and I don't believe the majority of the internet community would
either."
We already have. It's called TV. You put up with 3-4 ads every ten minutes or
so. We as a community need to stop trying to force old models onto a new
paradigm. Models are just that, examples for us to follow if they fit. They
will not necessarily fit perfectly or at all. They just give us a starting
point to think about things.
If I am a consumer surfing the web and I see an advertisement in any form, don't
you think I would rather know that the supermarket down the road is having a
sale rather than the fact that with MasterCard I can master the possibilities?
There is a place for both, but the power really comes in when I can surf ESPNet
and see ads for my local sporting goods store or Beatrice's Web Guide and see
ads for my local hair salon. The only way this is possible from a consumer or
from an advertiser standpoint is with a middleman.
If I am the local Bob's sporting goods store, I would not go to ESPNet and buy
advertising that maybe 1 of my target market might see in a week. But, I would
go to a middleman that can put my ad up on all sports sites seen by local
customers. We have a suggestion for one way to do that with the ISP middleman
model suggested on another portion of this thread. What is another possibility?
Let's think of another way we can do this, rather than suggesting that this way
can't be done.
I hope this doesn't deter anyone. There have been some fascinating discussions
going on on this list of late.
