ONLINE-ADS>> How many web sites?

Dear Group:

My co-workers and I are trying to find out how many web sites host ads.
Although this seemed to be an easy question at first we have run into some
road blocks.

Road block number 1:

What is your understood definition of a web site? Is it defined strictly
by the domain name (meaning that ISPs, .edus, and Geocities service types
would be considered as "one site"), or is it defined by actual content
(meaning student pages or free web space would be considered separate of
its host).

Road block number 2:

Given the answer to number one, how many web sites are on the web.

Given the answer to the top two questions, I was then wondering out of the
"non-top fifty" publisher web sites (top-fifty ranking being based on a
combination of traffic and ad revenues) which of these host advertisements?
I am lead to believe that the number is around 20%, but I have no problem
believing the number to be greater or lesser than 20%. This number does not
have to be a percentage it can be just a number like two million.

Thank you very much for your help and participation
