What an interesting and eye-opening discussion you've started Peter. I've
been forced to delurk since no one has mentioned the lawsuit recently
settled here in the US regarding framing other sites' content.

TotalNews framed content and then sold advertising around the framed
content. Check the following urls from ZDNET, Forbes and other sources.
While it doesn't settle the issue, either legally or ethically, it does
make for some interesting reading. Enjoy.

Take a read on the article (March 3, 1997) from John Dvorak (PC Magazine)
that criticizes the lawsuit
(http://www8.zdnet.com/pcmag/insites/dvorak/jd970303.htm).

Here is an article leading up to the settlement. It is a May 22, 1997
article from ZDNet
(http://www.zdnet.com/zdnn/content/zdnn/0522/zdnn0005.html). It discusses
the lawsuit in detail, gets some quotes from the parties involved, and
discusses the issue of linking.

A summary of the agreement from Forbes Magazine
(http://www.forbes.com/tool/html/mom.htm)

A sumary of the agreement by Alan Ghatan, a Canadian lawyer
(http://www.gahtan.com/alan/articles/settle.htm)

Post settlement fireworks. Read this article from ZDNet of June 11, 1997
on what happened after the settlement.

For additional articles and commentary on this issue, do a search in
AltaVista with "totalnews+lawsuit" - you'll get an eyeful.
