We use a variation of this with our clients that sell to the Japanese (and
in other languages):

Once an order has been shipped, the client goes to a form and enters the
e-mail address for the order and the shipping tracking number for either
FedEx or US Express Mail and presses submit. This launches a script that
we wrote that builds a Japanese language response thanking them for the
order and has a link to a page on the client's site that allows them to
check the status of the shipment. On that page are offers for a discount
and to "upsell" a complementing product like Cliff suggests.

This does 2 things:

1. Japanese are VERY skeptical about buying online. This allows them to
receive "piece-of-mind," from a neutral 3d party, that their order is on
the way.

2. Now that they feel "relieved" that they did not get ripped off they are
"very" likely, given the right product and price, to buy again.

Jut my 2 cents but it works VERY well!
