YES! Absolutely switch from your current opt-out system to an opt-in.
Why? For a couple reasons:

1) 99% of all people hate unsolicited e-mail.
2) Not everyone may notice that the box is checked by default -
they may assume that they have to check it to be added.
3) based on those two facts ... many of the people who have been
added to your mailing list may not have known they were being added, and
therefore assume that the messages you are sending are unsolicited.
4) see item #1
5) therefore, you could actually be hurting your business because
people think, incorrectly, that you've added them to your mailing list
without their permission.

So, if you make it an opt-in box, there's no way that they can make that
mistake, and that makes for much happier customers and better
word-of-mouth publicity.
