We originally looked at WebRings as a solid alternative to our current
linking campaigns, and then felt that the existing rings were _not_
valuable to our clients for one key reason:

The potential for the denigration of brand seemed higher than the potential
for building trust in brand.

The concept of the rings themselves seemed solid, but it was the lack of
control over any particular ring that turned us off for corporate
promotional use. Too many of the rings are "dead ends," meaning that one
greedy member of the ring does not place the necessary HTML on their page
to drive traffic on to the next site. I have not been back to
http://www.webring.org in some time now, but they were discussing some CGI
and Java script answers to these problems that coincided with some in-house
solutions we were already working on.

What are you talking, a banner-ad-ring? =).
