I had seen a few web rings before but never paid much attention to them,
but by bizzarre coincidence my new site went up and I started thinking
about making it part of some web rings at the same time as the discussion
on here started, so I wanted to throw out a few thoughts/questions
1. What do yinz (pittsburghese for "y'all") feel is a good number of sites
on a web ring, or put another way, how specific should it's focus be? I've
noticed some web rings have 600+ sites on them, which would seem to
indicate that there is a chance for anyone visiting one of those 600+ sites
to find out about my site, but do you think it is kind of an information
overload, like the cable systems with 120+ channels? Just TOO MANY choices
and the viewer forgets about it altogether? On the other hand, there are
some that only have 18 sites on them, which means my potential exposure is
likely much smaller, but there is a better chance that if a viewer DOES
look at the webringlist that she will pick my site, or maybe visit all of
the sites, something she probably would not do with a 600+ one.
To further complicate this example, the site that I am talking about has as
one of it's core features, a listing of all of the hardcore/punk shows in
New England. The 600+ webring is the "punk rock web ring," a very general
ring, there are even larger rings such as "music" or "independant music"
that are even more general. The much smaller one is specifically
"Boston-Punk." Chances are anyone looking at a Boston Punk site and
clicking on the web ring will have much more of an interest in finding out
about shows in New England than someone looking at, say, a webpage for the
German record label "Lost and Found."
2. How do you all feel about building a seperate "webrings" page? Do you
feel that ethically and even practically speaking webrings (and on a
similar note, banner exchanges) should be on the main pages that people
will view most, or is it acceptable or maybe even better to put them on a
page of their own?
Comments/ideas?
