Before I noticed this thread on webrings, I had forgotten about them entirely.
Truth is, I tried a few of the well known webrings last year, with negative
results. It would be bad form to mention them by name, so I won't. This is my
observation at this point on webrings; They are a thing of the past, especially
where Advertising and Promotion are concerned. In the world of marketing on the
web, they are useless.

I suppose they still have a place in the area of "niche interest", but I predict
their demise due to the cost of maintaining them without adequate sponsorship
dollars coming in. I tried 2 well known webrings for 1 month each, and I
think I
remember getting about 10 - 20 visits through them. I took them down due
to their
slow servers holding up my pages. I think a good reciprocal link is
always worth
much more than any webring.

When a savvy surfer enters a site, he/she clicks a reciprocal link to get
additional information about a certain subject of interest. In my opinion, most
savvy web users don't use webrings due to the lack of directional control (
I said
MOST, not ALL). They really don't know where they are going next. Hence, in my
opinion webrings are very limited and ineffective as a traffic builder in
my niche.
