Al Bredenberg and Donna Dolezal Zelzer just had an exchange about the User
Interface Engineering report (actually, Al introduced the report's content,
and Donna commented.)

I don't remember anymore whether Jared Spool's point about graphic design
("It doesn't matter.") is clarified in his on-web version of the report.
Just so that people understand, however, the reason he says that it doesn't
matter is because people don't wait for the large graphics to load.
Rather, time and again the UIE folks witnessed both Internet Veterans and
Internet Newbies click on the *first available text * that remotely had a
possibility of answering their question. In their testing, people were all
searching sites for particular pieces of information. (After all,
something like 86% of us told the folks at GVU that searching for
information is our primary web activity.)

Cheers,

Marianne Cooley
