Our friends at Advertising Age are conducting a survey to measure: "how
marketers deal with agencies and other resources on interactive projects."
I would encourage everyone to participate in this survey, if you can. In my
opinion, too many perceptions about our industry are the products of either
comments made by consulting firms that have never actually ran an online
campaign; or by companies with project budgets that are more than many of
our annual operating budgets. Here is an opportunity for the other 95% of
the industry to speak.

Newspaper network gears up

Another ad network was in the news this week. The New Century Network (NCN)
is recruiting online newspapers on which to run ads. NCN member sites pay
an annual fee and receive a share of the online advertising. To date,
several major metropolitan newspapers have joined.

This is an interesting story about how IBM used a campaign combining
traditional and new media to reach a target audience at a fraction of the
usual costs. So often it seems everyone is preoccupied with how to turn web
sites into direct revenue generators. Truth is, many sites can better serve
their organizations by being promotional vehicles. This story is an
excellent example of just that.
