Eric Ward certainly hit the nail on the head when he wrote:

>Quick true story:

>Client does big media push.
>Client gets covered in Internet World Magazine
>Client happy
>Client buys 80 copies for office, friends, grandmother
>Client sees no discernable spike in hits whatsoever from
> Internet World print coverage
>Client still thrilled with Internet World coverage
>Client frames Internet World article, hangs on wall
>Next campaign, client gets covered online at C|net
> hits increase 10 fold over next 7 days...

>Links, baby, links....

This story could be about one of our sites; Teen-Net(www.teen-net.com).
After launching Teen-Net last September, we were immediately met
with an incredible response. Being selected as the featured site
on Netscape's "What's New?", we were instantly getting over 60,000
hits a day and over 800 e-mails and responses to our
interactive site.

We thought we were going to be living in the Caribbean, using
FTP to upload changes as we sip on pina coladas on the beach.
But then our time was up and someone else got the honor of being
featured on Netscape.

Our traffic suddenly dwindled to several thousand hits a day. We
immediately took action, sending e-mail to the thousands of teens
in our mailing list (no, we did not keep all the original e-mail
sent to us, just actual subscribers)helped our traffic as most of
them did not bookmark the site.

Our traffic has been steadily growing as we added a chat room,
and kept adding content to the site. However it was not until the
high-end links-C|NET's Best of the Web and Web Crawler select that
our traffic has dramatically and consistently grown.

Our hits has exploded from 10,000 hits a day in December to over
40,000 today. Word of mouth and the Link Exchange have also contributed
to this steady rise. Now I have to severely increase my bandwidth to
adequately support the traffic (and hopefully get a sponsor too).

I personally don't understand all the talk about Link Exchange. After
squandering our early volume of visitors, I now value each and every
user to any of our sites. The cost is right, and if you only get one
visit, it is worth it. Besides, if that one person tell two people...
