Hi Rich,
Owning the domain for multiple URLs to your site has its advantages. First,
it can eliminate the opportunity for a competitor to benefit from a domain
that is similar to yours. And as you indicated, if your URLs are similar,
such as your two URLs with and without a hyphen, people will still get to
your site.
For URLs that are disimilar, but closely related to your product or
service, there is also an advantage. Take a look at Ragu.com. (A great site
by the way) You can also get there with Eat.com.. Ragu.com is the URL they
promote. I'm pretty sure they don't promote Eat.com because Eats.com. takes
you somewhere completely different. And of course, brand recognition is a
major reason for their site, so Ragu.com gets the press. Because they don't
own Eats.com, the folks at Ragu know there might be some confusion in the
marketplace. In this scenario, Ragu benefits from an URL that screams out
its brand, and a sister URL that people might also easily remember and will
generate more hits from the search engines.
Try using multiple URLs, and track the traffic generated by each. Over time
you may find one URL is working better for you. Then that is the one you
promote. But, from a public relations standpoint - and this is a major
point - only use ONE URL for your promotions, and on your correspondence.
Do your best not to confuse your public. Be consistent this way, and allow
for other URLs to work for you behind the scenes. Personally, I love the
name Awesome Angels. That is your brand, and eventually, with proper
promotion, you will increase recognition. I wish you success.
