Early in 1995, I consulted with a company that wanted to put its database on
the Web. We decided to go with static pages and pre-generated indices rather
than database queries on-the-fly. This meant faster access time, no
programming on the server, lower cost for software, and easy extension from
the client's current database. This method can work if you have only a few
simple queries and a good search engine. One of the unanticipated benefits
of this approach was that the site is all over the search engines' indices.
When you search any of th e major search engines for keywords that are found
in the database, you'll find hundreds of hits for my client, one for each of
the pre-generated pages and one for the index page. We didn't do this to
intentionally "stuff" the search engines, but because of the way
spider-driven search engines work, it had that side effect.

So you might think again about creating Web pages on-the-fly. There are
definite advantages to a well-conceived pre-generated index, even if you
have many megabytes of data.

For another example of pre-generated indices with a search engine, see
