I must firmly disagree with that. First, there are low cost solutions for
banner management that are in no way like re-inventing the wheel.
Re-inventing the wheel would be trying to build the program yourself.
Further, web ad sales networks are not a cookie cutter solution for
everyone. Let me explain.
The conclusion that I have come to about most of these services is:
First, at the rate of 50% (or whatever) return after agency commision, I'm
left with 42.5% of the sale price and have to wait 60 days (or so) to get it
(most of these services seem to ask for a similarly high rate), When I owned
a rep. firm (in a different industy/past life) we were paid 5% on sales, 30
days after receipt of payment (this was and is many industries standard),
and we were happy with that. The object was to sell alot of little things to
alot of accounts over a long period of time, and not to try make a quick buck.
I would be happy to hire a service if and only if they could provide some
sort of benefit to me over going out and getting the business myself, ie:
1) Respectable commision rate.
2) EXISTING CONTACTS with media planners/buyers and/or product managers IN
MY INDUSTRY (most services I have found deal with high tech clients, not
clients that would find value in my audience).
3) Some sort of non-compete policy (if the service has total clients
spending X # of dollars on sites like mine, what competative sites do I have
to share it with).
These services may be of value to general interest sites, widely marketed
products, or site owners with no marketing experience, but I have yet to
find one that knows our industry and I don't have the time or money for them
to learn.
