Hi all,

I've been following your discussionlist for a couple of months now
and honestly, I'm surprised and stunned about the number of opinions
that go around.

Therefore I thought it couldn't hurt to add mine as well.

I'm a software developer in the Netherlands, a place where Internet
is not really grooved in yet. Only about 28% of compnaies are
actually using Internet, and most of it is for collecting data from
their suppliers, and for using E-mail.

As to forcing people to look...isn't the answer simple?

Take a look to TV-advertising, where (at one point in time) advertisers
were convinced they could force people to look at their ads. In first
instance this worked, but by now an entirely new lifestyle developed,
whereby people found all kinds of activities in orde to NOT have to
view the ads.

TOilet, getting some cheese, a drink, making a phonecall, browsing through
the TV-guide or the world-famous "zapping" (Wow...I wish I had the copyright on
that word...)

My question is:

Is the Internetbussiness so ignorant when it comes to experience? As some people
on your list already point out, a good way to avoid banners and ads is to
turn your graphics off
and that's something that will happen.

I can guarantee each and every one of you that - if you go ahead with
forcing people to view -
others will find ways to undermine your plans.

I feel it's like messing with somebody's own deteminism. When I'm on the
net, I'm the one deciding what I'm looking at. Frankly, if I hit a site
that shows things I don't want to see, I'll never return there. And I'm
pretty sure I'm not alone in that opinion. Forcing people to look only
proves that you can't make your ads interesting enough so that people WILL
VOLUNTARILY VIEW them (and of course click)

A question to all advertisers:

Please concentrate on the CONTENT of your ad, instead of trying to force
people to view. A well desgined ad attracts attention, and gets people to
click through.

I'd like to get feedback on this and I'll welcome anyone who wants to set
up a serious discussion
about this item.
