IN THE NEWS
-----------

Online papers turning profit
News.com
http://www.news.com/News/Item/0,4,7797,4000.html

Not every publishing concern is losing their shirt. Apparently more than
1/3 of the online newspapers last year made money through a hybrid revenue
model, which included advertising.

Metering Web Sites
NewsDay
http://www.newsday.com:80/plugin/ccov0216.htm

This article provides a summary of PC-Meter and its technology. The company
uses a model for data collection about Internet usage that is the same as
Nielsen uses for measuring TV usage - they have a box connected to roughly
15,000 home computers. This box collects data on the usage patterns of each
family member as he or she uses the computer to surf. Ironically, this
makes PC-Meter is more "Nielsen" than Nielsen itself when it comes to
quantifying and qualifying Internet usage. As I understand it Nielsen Media
Research, Nielsen's interactive division, just does what most everyone else
is doing - processing access log data to draw conclusions about the online
world. PC-Meter is at least measuring it at the source.

PR Firms watch over the Net
News.com
http://www.news.com/News/Item/0,4,7936,00.html

A new service has sprung up to help manage the corporate image - Internet
monitoring. There are now PR firms that specialize in finding out what is
being said about a company on the Internet.

Marketing Tools

Expanding on the topic put for by list member Elizabeth Gardner, this story
discusses the use of the <META> tag to load a commercial message prior to
the loading of a web page. The story points our several advantages,
including the ability to defeat "banner-killing" programs like Fast
Forward.

It was inevitable: Webfomercials
News.com
http://www.news.com/News/Item/0,4,7821,4000.html

A new streaming multimedia software is being pitched for use in creating
more exciting ads.

COOL PROMOS
-----------

Web Site For Ken Burns's "Thomas Jefferson"
http://www.pbs.org/jefferson/

"Thomas Jefferson," the documentary by filmmaker Ken Burn's, is being
promoted through a web site jointly established by PBS and Corbis. This web
site is rich in content, including Jefferson's own writings and full
transcripts of interviews Burn's did when making the film. A superb example
of what a promotional site should be.
