Easy, but worth your time?
You get what you pay for. I've been doing PR since 1981. Sure, you can
always get a list "for free"...but it's not really free, now is it? Those
directories in library reference sections are limited in that they are not
updated as frequently as those FOR FEE press list subscriptions. Nothing's
worse than throwing your time and money away on obsolete information.
The real question is not "how can I obtain a press list for free"? The real
question is "how much is my time worth?"
I'd say the amount of time you spend sifting through multiple sources,
photocopying pages, jotting down addresses, keying in contact information
into databases and calling to verify the correct name of the editor who
covers your products is NOT worth it!
I'd rather spend my time calling editors and actually DOING the PR, rather
than GETTING READY to do it. I'd rather spend my time talking to editors and
reporters, which I enjoy a heck of a lot more than data entry and library
reference work. (I used to be a reference para-librarian for five years...so
I know what I'm talking about.)
It's worth it to invest the money in a database for starters and then spend
your efforts updating and customizing it to meet your needs.

I mention the American College Media Directory in my book. The last time I
looked, there was some information on this at
http://www.webcom.com/shambhu/acmd/home.html.
Other resources for FEE directories (such as diskettes, labels, etc.) include
- Bacon's Media Directories
- Burrelle's Media Directories
- Computer Media Directory (high technology)
- MediaMap (high technology)
- Press Access (high technology)
- SRDS (Oh, Kevin Leathers, that's Standard Rate and Data Services)

Q: Is it true that advertisers pay no commissions in the Adbot Network?
A: That's right. If you win an auction, what you bid is what you pay.
