Gary,

Yours is one of the most frequently asked questions on the net.
For the last few years I have placed thousands of classified ads,
as well as developed my own classified ad site. From my OWN
experiences (other people may differ), I can say that:

1. Most people who browse classified ad sites prefer to browse
the ones that don't have ten copies of the same ad. A site that
charges a small fee to post an ad is less likely to be inundated
with spam.

2. Many people start up free classified ad sites with an ulterior
motive in mind, being that they exist only to gather and sell your
email address to junk email lists. Not all do this, but I know of
several sites that do. If you like receiving junk email, posting to
50 or so free classified ad sites is an excellent way of getting on
the lists.

3. Charging a small fee allows a site to take a portion of their
monthly income and purchase banner advertising on other sites, which
in turn increases the traffic to your posted ad.

4. I have had good success posting to a handful of sites that charge
a fee, but be careful not to go overboard without testing the site or
ad's response. There is an index of all of the Classified Ad sites
