Hey all,

I've decided to start posting URLs on a regular basis (no more than once a
week) to interesting articles and tidbits regarding online advertising and
promotion I run across in my readings. Hopefully, it will spark new topics
of conversation and help us keep up to date on what is happening in the
field we all love so dearly.

I'm calling it "Ad Bytes," and I'll put that in the subject line along with
the date and an issue number.

Here is issue 1!

AOL's new business model
By Janet Kornblum
January 9, 1997, 1:15 p.m. PT

http://www.news.com/News/Item/0,4,6886,4000.html

Article about how AOL is transitioning its business model. What caught my
eye is that according to the article, AOL's next generation of client
software will allow multimedia ads.

MICROSCOPE - Weekly Web Ad Reviews
http://www.pscentral.com/

This is a cool zine I ran across a month or so ago and have been meaning to
post a note about. They review web banners every week. Worth the time to
make it a regular stop in your surfing schedule.

==========

Advertisers To Boost Web Investment This Year
By LOUIS TRAGER
San Francisco Examiner
http://nytsyn.com/live/Latest/010_011097_100008_21431.html

According to this article, experts are predicting online ad spending will
triple this year. Also noted in the article - 2/3rds of respondents in a
Forrester Research survey reported that their web advertising had been
successful last year.

==========

Calculating the Potential of Web Advertising
By Kathleen Murphy
Web Week
http://www.webweek.com/current/special/advertising.html

Following a similar tone as the previous article, this one quotes
predictions for 1997 from various sources. Some of the more interesting
ones include: ad networks segmenting their sites into specific
demographics; the birth of a virtual trading floor for online advertising;
and software that can track audio and chat-based ads.

NetMarketing's Net Tip for the week of December 31 to January 3.
KNOW WHY CONSUMERS BUY / DON'T THINK YOU'RE A PUBLISHER
NetMarketing
http://netb2b.com/cgi-bin/cgi_daily_archive/96/12/29/-13

According to Steve Klein of Kirshenbaum Bond & Partners, "marketers
shouldn't pack their Web sites with information." It is unclear in the
brief articles exactly what he means by this. I am hoping he means
extraneous content beyond the focus of the site.

Banners that move make a big impression
Ads that say `notice me' are the latest rage online
by Kim Cleland and Matt Carmichael
Advertising Age

http://www.adage.com/interactive/articles/19970113/article3.html

Discusses the new wave of animated and interactive banners. Featured is a
particularly cool banner run on Yahoo for Conde Net's Epicurious web site.
The banner was a search form allowing "consumers to search the recipe and
travel databases on the sites, and then pointed them directly to
corresponding areas on Epicurious."

Thats it!
