Morgan Ross mentioned that his firm is developing a new site which
he expects will be attractive to advertisers. He asked:
> Would you recommend we place sample-type ads soliciting the

> what say you?"
I absolutely agree that "Advertise Here" messages are tacky.
I would strongly suggest the use of "public service" banner ads
to show the placement and availability of ad space. (You can
put a small-type "Advertise Here" link under the ad if you
wish.)
Morgan also asked "What about Link Exchange?"
I happen to like Link Exchange as a method of drawing
traffic to a site. HOWEVER, any geographically
narrow site (like mine or yours) will draw much fewer
click-throughs, since 90% or 98% of the audience
are unlikely to be even potential visitors. I would
suggest that you look for reciprocal links or banners
with sites in your area. You should talk to Link
Exchange and other vendors about whether or
not they can provide geographic targetting (I know
that every legitimate company has some form of
targetting "in the works").
There is a perception among some ad agencies that
Link Exchange is not a "legitimate" advertisement and
thus it is possible that carrying a Link Exchange banner
will be viewed as a negative by some agencies and
perhaps some potential advertisers.
