Work that cold calling - but it has to be done by someone who would
normally speak to the clients at adsale close level and not just some
college hire with a script to stick to. Target the 100 largest potential
clients for your products and start calling from the switchboard up to
find the right person. Then switch to snail / email. And support your
pitch with your website and media kits. I'm convinced that getting one to
one with the decision-makers is what it takes nowadays.

Speaking from experience, that's how we went about selling our website
promotion service (multi-ad mousepads in cybercafes). We hit the 100 top
web sites on the phone (transatlantic - ouch), and when they asked "Ah,
but what do these linkpads look like?", we pointed them at the web page
while_on_the_phone. It's been six months now, and our clients have
included Yahoo!, Lycos, Apple's Webcasts, Starwave, Music Boulevard...
