At one time I was in full agreement with your premise. However, I found
out the hard way that many people, a majority I suspect, don't agree.
About a year ago, we created a targeted email list and sent out a brief
product promotion to a group who absolutely needed our product and were
responsive to other traditional promotional mechanisms. We in fact
achieved a very high response rate. The responses, unfortunately, were
harshly directed at our use of email to contact them and not one would
even consider looking at our product as a result. In no uncertain terms,
they felt we had spammed them. They were quite passionate and colorful
in their responses, I might add.

Perhaps attitudes have changes in the past year as email users
proliferate, but I for one am not ready to make that assumption.
