Here's another way of promoting a web site. It may not be new, but I don't
see many people doing it this particular way.
I have been operating a monthly contest for about a year and a half on my
Mall and it is becoming more and more popular. From the sponsor's point of
view, it's very simple. I have one of my mall clients sponsor the contest
and provide a prize whose value is at least $200.00. In return the sponsor
receives quite a few additional visits to his sites. The contest entrants
have to guess how many hits the sponsor's home page will receive by the end
of the contest. They have three guesses (to promote return visits) and the
closest guess wins. In the case of a tie the person who guessed earliest in
the month wins. To add a little mystery, I remove the visible counter 24
hours before the end of the contest but still have the hits counting.
The contest is promoted through our 1000 plus subscribed mailing list as
well as to contest announce web sites and newsgroups. It is also
highlighted on the home page of our mall. Depending on the prizes, sponsors
have received as few as 300 extra visits and as many as 1500 extra visits.
While it may not be the only way to promote a site, it's certainly an
effective tool in one's arsenal. I don't charge the sponsor anything other
than the prize, so it's a good deal all around. I haven't had problems
finding sponsors, and many have repeated a few times. However, I want some
new sponsors, and I would like to open this opportunity to this group.
You can run such a contest yourself, as it's not too difficult, but if you
don't want the hassle of receiving hundreds/thousands of e-mails (contest
guesses), and doing the registration, then I would be happy to run it for
you on our site at no cost other than the prize. You can offer your
products or other merchandise if you like, but I won't consider any prize
whose value is less than $200.00. This may sound like a solicitation, and I
guess it is, but I don't receive any money for this, however it will make
my life easier by not having to go after sponsors individually. My benefit
from all this is the same as yours. We both end up with more visits.

long address, but that will be changing later this year :-)
