I would echo Murray's comments about contests being a good way to
attract traffic. We at The MegaMall have a slightly different model
than Murray described - we provide only our paying advertisers the
ability to easily and quickly create their own contest by filling out
a simple html form, pasting the 4 lines of html code for the entry
buton to be hidden on their site, and instructions for accessing their
entrant information via a password protected page.
Many of our merchants run contests continually and, through that process,
we have been able to prove that these contests do in fact generate
repeat visits - via people re-visiting and re-entering contests when the
new rounds start.
We've also jumped on the bandwagon for various new technologies
whenever possible, and are currently experimenting with the effectiveness
of "pushing" shopping alerts, along with newsfeeds, stock quotes, sports
scores, etc., via a customized Java desktop MyYahoo! news ticker.
We also provide a web based headline news feed via Individual, Inc.,
as well as an Online Greeting Card Center.
Interestingly, it's not yet evident to us whether our
shoppers are being drawn back or are all that interested in the news feeds.
We're trying to figure out how to position and promote the web based
and java desktop news on our site in a logical way that relates to the
shopping experience.
We also provide a Java based chat via Earthweb chat and have
definitely seen repeat and prolonged visits related to the chat
area.
