I would also agree with Murray. Our contest section has proved to be one of
the most popular section of our site (http://www.discovercanada.com). We
took the time to register at a number of the "Contest Listing" sites with
very positive results. A good list of these sites can be found at
http://www.181-4.com/promotions/sweeps.html . You do get people who just
register at any contest possible. However the majority of the entries do
fit the sites demographics (Adventure Travel / Skiing).
For our first contest we gave away a heli-skiing holiday donated by one of
our listing members. It was a $1,500 value and we promoted it as actively
as we could. It definitely drove traffic to the site. Now that the word is
out, our second contest, a 5 day ski trip to Sunshine Village in Banff, has
doubled our site traffic.
We have found that in Canada companies in the adventure travel industry are
not willing to spend $100 on online advertising but are willing to give a
$1,500 prize package - go figure. It is a great way to introduce companies
to the benefits of the Internet without having them to write a check. The
downside is it is hard to buy groceries with a promotional prize. We
provided the company with a full report on the contest and they were so
impressed and want to donate another prize. Eventually we are hoping that
these promotional partners will understand the value of online promotion
and start to pay for it.
