If you are always the sponsor of the same contest, I might agree, but we
have a different sponsor every month. This provides a different prize and
contestants who have to visit different sites.

If the site is inviting enough, the odd contestant WILL either come back,
or browse further. As long as we provide variety in the way of sponsors and
prizes, the contests are fresh and new each month. Yes, we receive many
visitors who come just for the contest, but because they are checking out
different sites each time, each sponsor has an opportunity to attract a
first time viewer.

By allowing three chances to win, we also in essence invite the contestant
to revisit the site to make his/her guess more accurate, thus giving the
sponsor an additional opportunity to "grab" the contestant.

True, but contests are another marketing tool to enhance a sponsor's
visibility, and the cost is quite affordable.

That may be true if it's the same retailer, but in our case we have a
different sponsor every month, and the most a sponsor will be allowed to
repeat in a 12 month period is 2 times. Even credible retailers have at
least 2 sales a year.
