Standard for site auditing
NEWS.com
http://www.news.com/News/Item/0,4,7339,00.html
The Audit Bureau of Circulation (ABC) has announced that the official
measure of Web site traffic is now the "page impression." A page impression
is defined as a, "Web site page that is actually delivered to the user by
the host server." How ABC is going to accurately measure page delivery in
the face of such things as cashing or people hitting the reload button
multiple times because the network is moving too slow for them, were of
course not addressed. After reading so many stories like this one that
simplify the situation, I wonder if these industry giants really understand
the issues involved.

Packet

Columnist Michael Schrage makes an interesting point this week about web
sites for products like pepsi.com or zima.com. He points out that it is
probably more cost effective to just do online advertising buys than create
a dedicated brand-building site.

PBS Seeks New Revenue in Web Ads
Wired.com
http://www.wired.com/news/business/story/1606.html
PBS announced this week that they will be selling ad space on their web
site. They cite dwindling Federal support as the reason for the move
towards this new revenue stream. By selling ads on the web, PBS avoids the
FCC regulations that stipulate public television can only accept
advertising in the form of "underwriting credits."

Regulating the Web?
FDA Asks Questions About Sites for Drugs and Medical Devices
WebWeek
http://www.webweek.com/current/markcomm/fda.html
This is a story on an issue that has actually been brewing for several
months. Current FDA regulations restrict the way medical companies can
advertise their products. However, these regulations pre-date the web. And
the issue is further complicated because the web brings together
information from commercial as well as private sources. A person saying
that drug X cures AIDS is not regulated, while a company making that same
claim would be. The fact that statements from such different sources not
only can co-exist in the same medium but also be linked together to support
each other is a huge can-of-worms for the FDA.
Here is an interesting side note. A colleague of mine who runs an
independent web site containing medical information shared this story with
me. He was at a meeting in Washington DC back in October where an FDA
representative discussed these issues. My colleague raise the question of
how the FDA saw medical advertising on discussion lists fitting into the
picture. The FDA representative said, "Oh, you mean chats on AOL." The
person seemed to had no understanding of what a discussion list was.
