After looking at many models, we have included an "advertorial"
(sponsorship) approach as one of our options.

The Bay Area Gardener is regional based gardening e-zine (San Francisco &
Monterey Bay areas) and is in the process right now of signing contracts
and working on advertorial layout and content with two national sponsors.

Their "advertorials" will reside on our Web site, be accessed from small,
logo type banners on our home page. Each advertorial will be customized
for our readership area, including special discounts, special products
types, and so on. Visitors will offer an option of going to the
advertiser's home site, but the advertorials will be complete and
self-contained enough to stand on their own (e.g. "call 800-555-5555 and
mention you heard about us on the Bay Area Gardener to receive a 15%
discount plus free shipping...")

We've documented this option, along with our other advertising options at
<http://www.gardens.com/ads/ads.htm>.

We are fairly new and have just gotten our readership levels high enough to
warrant advertiser support. We are using our contacts within this industry
as point of entry and so far have avoided the folks who only talk
click-through banners. We work mostly with marketing people, who find the
funding for us in marketing budgets. This approach has garnered our
initial sponsors -- both well respected and widely known in our industry --
and we will them as leverage to sign others.
