What's a site to do?

We are launching a java-only multiplayer gaming room on August 1st, and
trying to determine the best model for generating revenue. It seems that
most online gaming sites are moving toward a pay for play model, and we are
trying to determine if we can offer our service for free and have it
supported completely by advertisers.

I would like to request your wisdom and input regarding the service and the
business model we are investigating.

* The service is called ClassicGames.com
Rather than target the 14-24 males, we are targeting a more mature audience
interested in social games, not twitch games.

* There are 13 games online now, with a total of 25 on the horizon for 1997.

* Since the site is Java-based, PC, Macintosh, Unix, and Solaris players
can all join in the fun.

* We will have banner space available for every game that is played. We do
not wish to flip banners during a game, only between them, so as to not
distract the player. One significant point is that banners will remain in
view for the duration of a game, which could be 3-30 minutes depending on
the game. This is a long time for an advertiser to make an impression.

* Since the banner is in a Java window, a click on the banner would bring
the sponsor's page up in the browser window BEHIND the game window. When
they leave the game room, they will automatically see the sponsor's page
(of course they could go to it while playing if they wanted...)

* The site is monitored in order to try and keep it safe for families.

* We are building tournaments and standings into the code as well. There
will be software prizes awarded.

* By keeping the site free, we think we can attract enough users.

Here are my questions...

1) By targeting a more mature market, are we more likely to acquire higher
dollar sponsors?

2) Does the long impression generated during a game make the ad more valuable?

3) How many registered users would we need to have in order to sell ads?

4) Should we keep the site free, and can we support it with advertising?

5) What do you think of the service in general?

6) Do you have any insight into how our service might stand out from other
banner opportunities on the web?

Currently, the site is online at http://www.springerspan.com
NOTE: The name and the design of the site will change in time for our
launch August 1st. But the functionalitiy of the site is there now. We
already have over 7000 registered members and have enjoyed over 120 users
at one time.

I look forward to hearing your comments and criticisms.

From: 24/7 Ticket Service <webmaster_at_webtickets.com>

Greetings,

I run the 24/7 Ticket Service site, http://www.webtickets.com, and
have been enjoying the list.

I was running a meta refresh rotating banner with javascript multiple
window update to run context sensitive ad sequences but have had to
abandon this approach due to usability concerns with the back button.
Of course, I could have implemented my own back button but the Boss
said that wouldn't cut it.

So now I'm looking for a cgi random banner system. I did a surf recently
and found a bunch of them, but the session bookmarks were lost. I'll be
doing it
again and will post what I find, but I'm looking for suggestions. I'd like the
cgi to have a text file with the banners URLs for each page (the meta refresh
system was nice because it allowed HTML to be used to create an ad,
potentially taking advantage of larger screens). It could automatically
match the referrer to the appropriate page and serve up one of the banners.

It would also be nice to adjust the weights and reporting is key. Seems
like I found one that would offer up real time data to particular banner ad
customers.

We do link exchanges primarily but may sell ads eventually as we run a
pretty comprehensive guide. Any other attributes I should look for?

Regards,
Andy Edmonds

Is there anyone who has put together promotions to increase
traffic/members/impressions to their site?

My site is a vitrual community targeting college students
(http://www.collegeclub.com) and I am currently putting together my
promotional plans for the fall semester. We are looking at different
ways to attract students and to spread that always valuable word of
mouth. I figured I would see what kind of ideas you all could come up
with -- maybe not exhaust my brain juices so much :-). If anyone has
done something targeting college students that has worked (or if you
have some really creative ideas) please share the knowledge!

The site is currently also going through a major overhaul for the fall,
so we want to make sure we get as many people there as possible after
this summer.

I hope to hear some creative ideas!

Victor

Hi, I am a new subscriber to this list.

I am trying to find suggestions, experiences and possibly technological
solutions regarding any kind of sophisticated, flexible management
(assignement, tracking, accounting, etc.) of advertorial space (banners,
and so on) on web sites.

Is anyone in this list willing to provide me witg some hints?.
Thank you for help.

Subject: Reader Surveys for Traffic Info & Contests

Dear Online-Ads Listmembers,

Our overall traffic is very good, but we'd like to learn why some people
visit only one page and leave. So we've recently considered directly asking
our readers what they think of our site. Our guestbook consistently gives
us positive feedback about what people are finding, so it is not helpful in
solving the single page mystery. It might just be that people are
re-visiting, and know what they like, but we're not sure.

We are the Self-Help & Psychology Magazine (which some of you have
generously volunteered your time and talents to develop.) We've pulled
together an few questions, and want to know if you have found any
additional questions helpful in surveying your readers, or if you have
other ideas about how to get such information.
Here's the questionnaire we've been able to develop to date:

Is this your first visit?
What are you looking for?
How did you find us?
How would you rate our navigation? great good ok fair poor
Will you come back? Why?

Also, in convincing people to complete our survey, we have been considering
having a contest with coupons to our bookstore, or even free advertising
through a banner ad on the website. Have any of you tried such an approach?
How did it work? Any comments? Other ideas for getting folks to complete
the survey?

Please feel free to send answers to me *directly* as well as to this list.
Thank you in advance.
Best regards,
Marlene Maheu

Hello, all - for your information, the British Tourist Authority is
launching the first British-oriented travel Supersite on July 16th. The
site is quite extensive, and very well designed, with some unique
features such as a "Virtual Brochure". This feature allows a viewer to
click on an icon within the content, and it saves the reference, which
is compiled into a personal itinerary for that individual viewer. Nifty!

There is also an online ad rate card, including a direct order form. For
a confidential preview of the site for the readers of this list, prior
to its official splash launch, check out:

I'm in need of an advertising contract to use when signing up clients to advertise on my site. Not being a lawyer and finding that the few lawyers I know don't deal with Internet related issues, I was wondering: Does anyone know of a place (perhaps on the Net -- or a software package) where you can get "template" contracts (for advertising) that can be modified for one's own site? Or is anyone wishing to share a version that they use? I understand that I'd have to get a lawyer to read over my modifications, but it would be a lot cheaper than having one written from scratch. Thanks in advance for your help.

I am designing an animated banner ad and want to image map 4 buttons. Is there any difference in image mapping an animated banner vs. animating a static banner? If so, does anyone know of any good resources to help me create an image map file before I send it to the site? I appreciate all your help and any additional comments about image mapping.

Thank You,

Hi all, I am a graduate student in the Communications department at the University of Washington. I am currently working on my thesis that I have yet to name, but the subject is on ad banners. I want to find out -- What does it take for a user to click on an ad banner? I realize that physical aspects of the banner such as banner size and location may have an important role in leading a user to click to the Web site, but I am more interested in finding out if a user who is reading the Web page content with extreme concentration will pause and click at the ad banner.

I do not want to enter into the details of a successful click through vs. an unsuccessful one, I just want to isolate the variables most likely to influence a user to click on a banner. During my research, I have come across many articles quoting researches that have been undertaken in this area. But I have been unable to get any of the researchers to part with their findings. Do any of you know of any research that I can get my hands on? I will be very grateful for any leads. Thanks, Vimla

Hello all,

I work for the Motley Fool, a top investment educational site on America Online and the Web. We are currently exploring opportunities abroad in the United Kingdom.

How is the Internet advertising industry in the UK? Are banners the main method of advertising? Who are the top advertisers/content producers? Are financial companies (brokers, banks, insurance companies, etc.) advertising on the Net?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

I manage several online catalogs and most of my clients are very much looking into and interested in one-to-one software for their sites.

I've looked into NetPerceptions, Broadvision, Firefly and a host of other ad management programs.

Would really appreciate any "from the trenches" feedback on these packages. They're expensive, so I want to make the best decision possible.

Thanks in advance.

Fellow Internet Marketers,

Thanks so much for all the tips I recieved on how to write a winning E-mail Press Release. I plan to use the tips I recieved from the group to get me some FREE press. I'll let everyone know how it works out.

If you ever thought you had heard of an Entrepreneur wait till you hear about me. I own and operate three business. Only one is online Cajun World http://www.wworks.com/~cajunworld Go there I could use some pointers and some orders :-)

Well I am building a web page for the other business. It is sports puppets. The name of the sports puppets are Lil Champs. They are small hand puppets made to fit on your hand so you can cheer on your favorite team. When you squeeze the inside of the puppet it makes a scream and sticks its tongue out. In my opinion it is a homerun. Every college sports fan will want a Lil Champ. I am a young marketer and need some advise on how to market and advertise this site. I'll have it built in a week.

I am looking at going with some banner ads. I want to buy as many media spots on web sites as I can. I would love some spots on ESPN-NET, etc. As you can see I'm looking to market this baby. I only want to pay the web site owner if the consumer makes an order. Does anyone know where I start? Where do I go to get a list of media spots available forsale? What should I pay per order? The puppets retail for 19.95. I would be interested in trading links with anyone interested. I don't want to pay for media unless it equals a sale!!!

PLEASE, PLEASE help me. I know that many of you are ad agency's and know the procedure.

Thanks in advance for reading
