I joined this list several weeks ago and I think its an excellent resource.
Thanks.

Only 75-80 English%? That's interesting. We offer 13 different languages at
our site and we recently checked a slice (1.000.000 visitors) of the custom
logs that our programs generate. We found out that 81.23% chose the English
language to navigate our site.

Due to the nature of our service the site attracts "average surfers". Also,
we established a franchising system to let other web sites use the service
from our server. So the stats data were derived from about 1.500 web sites
world-wide. That's why we believe that 81.23% English is quite a
representative figure. However, if a visitor chose German this doesn't
necessarily mean they aren't fluent in English. So I think even more than
85% (90%?) of web users should be able to read English pages.

As for targeting ads by region, we use visitor's top level domains but
thanks to AOL and Compuserve this doesn't work 100%. Therefore we also use
the page language chosen.
