ONLINE-ADS>> 80 cents/clickthrough is NOT a good deal!

In an earlier message (June '97 archives), someone said that a person was
getting "a good deal" from a cheap but low-performance ad, which, once you
do the math, was at about 80 cents per click-through. Not so. A very
well-designed, moderately targeted ad on the DoubleClick network is
about 62 cents per click-through according to my calculations, and a good
ad on LinkExchange bought at member rates ($12.50 CPM, bought in blocks
of 4,000 impressions) can be even cheaper. However, you don't get real
value until you look away from major sites to the smaller sites -- the
ones that either have to sell their ads cheap to get any or are not the
primary source of income for the site maintainer. Some sites sell by
click-through, with rates ranging from 2 cents per clickthrough (no joke!)
to a more common 10 or 15 cents. What's more, I've found some sites which
have CPMs way below $10.

No, I won't give away where I find my deals for free :)
