MODERATOR's NOTE
----------------

Just a short note before we get to the news. Mark Welch has moved his
resource on ad networks under a new domain - http://www.markwelch.com/.
All the pages he has on this subject - banner advertising, counters and
trackers, ad servers and counter software - have a new URL.

If you haven't visited yet, it is worth checking out.

Now on to the news!

IN THE NEWS
-----------

Weeklies Unfazed by Sidewalk's Expansion
Wired News
http://www.wired.com/news/news/business/story/5055.html

Local news outlets in Minneapolis/St. Paul and Seattle think Microsoft's
Sidewalk just isn't compelling enough to get worried about. And they are
probably right for now. Lame is par for the first version of any
Microsoft product or service. But they always seem to get better. I guess
we will see what these guys think in a year when Sidewalk is taking a big
chunk of local ad revenue.

==============

Search engines urged to expand business model
News.com
http://www.news.com/News/Item/0,4,12267,00.html

The warning bell has been sounded. Search engines better come up with
sources of revenue other than advertising if they plan to survive.

==============

New Juno ad model offers targeting options
Ad Age
http://www.adage.com/interactive/articles/19970707/article2.html

The free email service Juno will start selling targeted advertising based
on the demographic information it collects from users. Rates will be as
high as $75 CPM for the best targeting.

==============

Top Ad Site Continues To Innovate
Web Week
http://www.webweek.com/current/markcomm/19970707-top.html

How does Netscape generate tens of millions of dollars in ad revenue? And
why isn't it being included in Jupiter's estimates of total online
advertising revenue? Read this article to find out.

==============

Video Banner Ad To Debut
Interactive Week
http://www4.zdnet.com/intweek/daily/970707c.html

Foote, Cone & Belding advertising agency in San Francisco is teaming with
InterVU Inc. to deliver video ad banners. InterVU's secret is that the
video is encoded a number of different ways so regardless of your
configuration you should see it. That is the theory, anyway. I don't
know if it was me or them, but I couldn't get the damn thing to work.

==============

_at_plan launches new Web profiling system
Ad Age
http://www.adage.com/interactive/articles/19970707/article1.html

A company called _at_plan is selling an ad planning tool that at its core
is a database of information on 40,000 Web users collected by the
Gallup Organization.

Mplayer Courting Non-Endemic Advertisers, Signs Levi's
Marketing Computers
http://www.marketingcomputers.com/news/9707/10_02.html

Here are details on Mplayer - a no-fee, ad supported gaming network.
There latest advertiser, Levis, joins the likes of Intel, Microsoft
and ZDNet as the network's major sponsors.

Readership Poll- What paid advertising works for promoting web sites?
NetProfit Magazine
http://www.netprofit-mag.com/issues/9707/polls.htm

NetProfit took a poll of its readers, asking the question:

"What methods of paid advertising has your company used to promote your
web site and would you consider them successful?"

It looks like print ads were the most successful and direct mail the least.
