I know this considered a "minor nit," but cookies actually identify
computers so that the Web server can track whoever is using that computer
at that moment.

The reason it's important to make this distinction is that there are
multiple ways to identify users other than with cookies, some of which
overcome the limitations of cookies.

Here are three projects we're working on where cookies wouldn't work:

* Identify customers using a computer at home, office, or an
in-store kiosk
* Track customers across a group of Web sites to "cross sell" products
* Allow multiple employees to use the same computer to receive
personalized notices

The bottom line is we should track people -- not computers.
