I agree with you, and I believe that in order for the use of cookies to
continue, users have to be educated to their value. I recently read (I
can't remember if it is on this list or not) a viewpoint that stated the
obvious, but made me think. He said, he was for cookies because they
provided him with the net experience that he wanted. It monitored his
favorites and so forth and allowed sites to cater to his interests. This
is exactly how cookies should be used.

Educating users to these values becomes the problem. If users were
educated about this and assured that the use of cookies from and on their
computer will be confidential and used for certain purposes only, users
will be less frightened about them.

For some, a simple statement of confidentiality would suffice but others
would need a full page view explaining the benefits of browsing the site
with cookies turned on as opposed to having them turned off.

The problem I see is that there are relatively few sites that use cookies
in a way to create incentives, although they could. For users to enjoy
your site and bear with the logins and cookies that you have is because the
perceive your site is of value to them. I think once these sites begin
providing a better surfing experience *because* of the use of cookies,
users will be more likely to consciously accept them.
