Infoseek launches targeted ads
News.com
http://www.news.com/News/Item/0,4,10998,00.html
InfoSeek officially announced its Ultramatch technology - an
artificial intelligence system for serving ads. It essentially
builds a profile of Infoseek's users via their activity on
the web site. Ultramatch then uses that information to
segregate users into affinity groups and serves only ads
likely to be of interest to a particular affinity group.
The artificial intelligence system used in Ultramatch is a
product of Aptex Software Inc. It is called SelectCast for Ad Servers.
SelectCast can integrate with many popular ad servers.

Banner Blunder
Mother Jones
http://www.motherjones.com/hellraiser_central/sideshow/fool.html
A banner ad and a news story conspired to embarrass the LA Times.
A banner from the popular site Motley Fool appeared over a photo
of a man in Zaire being lead off for execution. The banner's
pitch: "Follow that Fool."

Battle of the 'Nielsen of the Web' Wannabes
Wired News
http://www.wired.com/news/business/story/4091.html
RelevantKnowledge is going head-to-head with the well-know web
rating company PC Meter for the title of "the A. C. Nielsen of
the Web." A good idea that not quite there yet, PC Meter tracks
web site visits from the visitor's point of view. Using the
same concept as Nielsen does for estimating television viewership,
PC Meter records a user's surfing habits with a box attached to
the user's computer. The problem is PC Meter's sampling is small
and fairly skewed (12,000 Web-active households that use Windows).
RelevantKnowledge plans to change all that by monitoring home,
office and school use over a range of platforms. But some aren't
convinced it is enough, including web demographics expert Donna Hoffman.

The Dirty Truth About Click-Throughs
e-news
http://www.e-land.com/e-news_pages/click_trues.html
Another insight into the argument of paying for click-thoughs
versus impressions - the average click-through rate may be
due for a drop.

Quote.com Introduces New Advertising Opportunities to Reach
Targeted Audience Segments
PR Newswire
http://biz.yahoo.com/prnews/97/05/29/y0000_y00_2.html
Quote.com, the popular service dedicated to stock quotes, introduced
a bunch of new targeted advertising programs to reach their large and
affluent audience.

Lost World, LAPD: Hacks or hoax?
News.com
http://www.news.com/News/Item/0,4,11115,00.html
Getting your web site hacked could be the latest technique in
online promotion. Universal Studios claims a hacker altered the
front page of its "Lost World" web site on May 23. But others
say it was just a hoax to get attention, and the media fell for it.
