ONLINE-ADS>> AOL now sharing cached impression data

To follow up on my post earlier this week about the large number of ad
impressions and page views that go unrecorded by site's server logs due to
caching behind firewalls, I just reported for Ad Age that AOL has begun
releasing data on its members' Internet traffic from its cache files. I
spoke with someone from WarnerBros.Com who said the new data from AOL
indicates an additional 30% of traffic above what they record from their
server logs. With all the corporate caching that goes on, too, it might be
reasonable to estimate that caching hides an additional 50% of Internet
traffic. This would be a great topic for someone to research in more
detail. (Reports and surveys, as I'll say in the book I'm writing about Net
marketing, are a *great* way to get publicity.)
So far, AOL is releasing the data only to partners who produce content for
its network, but they indicated they might provide it for the Net community
at large if there's enough demand (hint, hint). The brief I wrote can be
found at Ad Age's site (look under the date of June 5):

Also, to the *many* folks who responded to my request for input on my book,
THANK YOU! I have not yet had a chance to reply to all of you, yet. My
apologies. But I've been crazed with deadlines this week. Will reply by the
end of the week, promise. :)
