I'd guess that most of us are in media sales, media buying, or
account service, instead of creative. Over the past year (or
slightly less), communications professionals as opposed to technical
professionals have become more and more prevalent in the online
advertising community - but John's posting is interesting.
Obviously advertising effectiveness affects our ad revenue - and
there_ are_ a lot of technical tricks we need to know about. Even
those of us who aren't technical have to understand some of
it. Current and developing technology is a big part of creative
development... Maybe we are just so dazzled by the technology we've
set aside analyzing more basic creative principles, or maybe there
just aren't that many artists and creative account management people
on this list.
But I am really curious: What percentage of us (on the list) have
technical backgrounds, what percentage have creative backgrounds,
what percentage have communications (sales or account management)
backgrounds? Do you ever do surveys, Richard?
[Moderator's note: We've never done a survey on this, but you should
be able to get a pretty good idea looking at the signatures of
people that post. Or you could put up a web page with a survey and
we will send the URL out to the list to ask people to fill it out.
There was more discussion about creative in the early days of this
list, but it may have run its course as a major subject for discussion.
The general trends, politics and developments of the online advertising
industry as a whole seem to be a focus of much of the discussion. But
ultimately the list will go in the directions that the list members
decide to take it -- Cliff (filling in for Richard for the next week).]
