Due to the things I do online, I have sort of been forced to become a
one-man ad agency with myself as my primary client. I design all
the internal ads for my site, and in my capacity as a content producer
for the Internet Movie Database, I design and produce the internal ads
they run for my column. Since the beginning of the year, my ads
running internally on the IMDb have received nearly 7,000,000
exposures. My college degree is in creative writing, but I have been a
computer hobbyist/enthusiast for nearly 16 years, so I have both a
creative and technical background.
It's been an interesting process to try to quantify from my own
experience what works best in general terms from a design standpoint,
as well as what best "sells" my product(s) to surfers and then come up
with the creative concepts to combine all of that into effective
banners. Even now I am still wrestling with this.
If there is interest, I would be glad to put up a page at my site with
various ads that I have run (most of them having received a minimum of
100,000 exposures), their respective click-through rates, and some
ideas on what I thought made them as successful or unsuccessful as
they were. If any ad pros (whether in creative, sales, etc.) wanted to
add their two cents, I could put up a guestbook script so everyone
could benefit from their input. I could even post other people's ads
so long as there was a good mix of successful and unsuccessful ads to
allow for comparing and contrasting.
Just drop me a note at greg_at_bulmash.com and let me know if you'd be
interested in that. If you'd like your ad to be on the page, e-mail it
to me, or e-mail me a URL where I can grab it. Along with that, please
provide the click-through rate it had and a description of the site or
content it was advertising. If enough people respond, I'll put it
together during the coming week and post the URL for the page to the
list.
