While cookies were handy to "tag" someone, there are several other good
technical approaches to tracking users -- some superior to cookies -- so
it'll be good when the audience doesn't have to worry about this issue.

One of the things we've found in helping customers create personalized Web
sites is that a significant amount of personalized content is needed to
motivate the average Web user to give any detailed demographic/interest
information.

The other interesting thing we've discovered is that the audience needs to
be told (several times) that the Web site can be personalized for them --
if they answer questions along the way. When personalization is done so
they can't see it, they don't understand that they need to participate by
providing information about themselves.
