`Rubber Sunglass' Ad Lures Surfers To AT&T Site
Computer News Daily
http://nytsyn.com/live/Latest/169_061897_164200_24037.html

Looks like lots of people were a bit miffed just like us by AT&T's
latest commercial. ( See Issue 20 of Ad Bytes for our review - http://www.o-a.com/archive/current/0050.html )

Exposed online
US News and World Report
http://www.usnews.com/usnews/issue/970623/23onli.htm

You know the adage: "A little knowledge can be dangerous." Well,
it applies full-force to this story. These reporters know very
little about tracking people online.

Though they rightfully raise serious issues we face as online
advertisers regarding consumer privacy, this story is riddled
with inaccuracies. For example, the story states:

"Using a technology called "cookies," some sites, unbeknownst
to you, can pick up the address of the site you most recently
visited and the Internet service provider (ISP) or online
service used..."

Sorry. You don't need cookies to do this. Plain, old HTTP
protocol encodes this info. If we wanted to "protect" consumers
from that, we would have to take away the very foundation of
the web.

And the story is full of other embarrassing examples. It is
this kind of misinformed reporting that gets people confused
and makes our lives as advertisers much harder.

Privacy and ad revenue issues impede growth
Ad Age

If you don't believe my previous rant, read this column from
former Advertising Age Editor, Debbie Williamson. She makes
some good arguments as to why privacy/tracking on the web is
overblown and impractical.

Finding a Definitive Way to Count an Audience
Wired News
http://www.wired.com/news/business/story/4468.html

Finally the IAB is tackling a serious problem - defining
standard terms and methodology for measuring online
advertising.

Study shows banners increase brand awareness
Ad Age

Here is some more proof that banners can be branding vehicles.

Using the Net: Direct sales vs. branding
NetMarketing

And here is more proof that banners are direct sales vehicles.
