ONLINE-ADS>> IEMMC = Spam Relay / Email validation for spammers

Mark J. Welch, Attorney at Law (markwelch_nospam_at_ca-probate.com)
Sun, 29 Jun 1997 14:35:40 -0700

I made the hideous mistake yesterday of registering
my email addresses with http://www.iemmc.org after
receiving several spams claiming to honor remove
requests sent there. Within 24 hours, I am now
receiving a marked increase in spams containing the
IEMMC tagline, plus I am actually getting spams
that were relayed BY the IEMMC.ORG server. (After
all, by following the IEMMC "remove" procedure,
which uses an email vertification, I allowed them
to validate that my server accepted email from the
IEMMC.ORG server.)

I have now discovered that the contact for IEMMC.ORG
is none other than walt_at_pwrnet.com -- the infamous
PWRNET.COM spammers control this domain!

I called AGIS.NET today to complain about this abuse
of a fraudulent "opt-out" procedure -- the one thing
that AGIS *claims* to prohibit -- and I was basically
told to go pound sand.

However, if there is a silver lining in this cloud,
it is that I can filter out incoming spam by just
automatically dumping every incoming email that
contains "IEMMC" in any header. It appears that
the NEVWEST.COM/LLV.COM spammers are now using the
IEMMC tag line, as are some Cyber Promo spammers.

I strongly urge ISPs to implement a block using the
IEMMC tags. Users should also be alerted NOT to use
the fraudulent IEMMC "remove" procedure since it is
used only to validate domains that accept spam from
the IEMMC.ORG server. (In other words, if ONE of an
ISP's customers uses the remove procedure, it will
open the floodgates of spam to ALL that ISP's
customers!)
