One flaw in your statement, dear moderator, is the assumption that folks
trained in traditional advertising are not versatile enough to adapt to a
different media. As an ad agency copywriter I wrote more than the fancy
four color ads everyone associates with advertising. I've written booklets,
long brochures, and advertorials -- information and content-driven stuff,
but if I hadn't, big deal. Any writer who can't take information provided
by a client and develop it into compelling prose really has no business
claiming to be a writer, whether in the ad business, pr business, or
publishing. Length really isn't as much of an issue as ability.
Let me see if can cause just a little excitement myself by veering off just
a tad:
What I would like to see in any content debate is at least some mention
about the protection of the English language. I am not a subscriber to
that ridiculous Wired manual of style, which is sort of an Ebonics for the
on-line world. Give me content, and give it to me without butchering the
language. This may sound hypocritical, coming from an ad writer, since we
so brazenly break rules of grammar. Well, I'm willing to own up to my
hypocrisy if it will have a positive impact on content development.
