In September 1996 I launched a content site with the idea of
supplementing a modest pension with advertising revenue. (When you've
finished laughing read on.)

I started with Commonwealth Network in October but after delivering
more than 100,000 impressions to Commonwealth I switched to
BurstMedia. I still haven't seen a cent from Commonwealth.

Burst get good CPM rates, take a reasonable commission, and pay on
time. For a short period they had 40% of my inventory sold, but most
of the time 80% or more of the inventory delivers their invisible
banner, which makes for fine stats but doesn't pay the rent.

The facts are obvious:

Banner space available is probably between five and ten times the
advertising demand.

The bulk of well paid advertising goes to the mega sites - it's
not simply that it's less trouble to deal with one site delivering 5
million exposures a month than 500 sites, it's also the potential to
customise - more flexibility.

The advertising networks are either scams or, where legitimate, are
inflexible, and have more members than they can realistically
satisfy.

Here is a possible solution: Limited co-operatives small enough to
remain flexible and democratic, but large enough to deal directly
with advertisers and their agencies.

If there are any a-ol members who can deliver a minimum of
100,000 ad banners a month, above the fold, interested in joining
such a co-operative please Email me. While the modus operandi will be
mutually agreed here are some initial thoughts.

1. Membership limited to 20.
2. All members will contribute to strategic, tactical, and
operational functions free, within their area of expertise.
3. Commission agents to be appointed in select cities for sales.
4. Auditing of sites to be by an appointed independent company.
5. An agreed % of revenue to be allotted for audience profile
research.
6. An independent firm of accountants appointed to receive and
distribute revenue.
7. Freedom to retain network affiliations or secure advertising from
any source other than the co-op.
