Bob,
Our site, The eGG (electronic Gourmet Guide) has had a dismal experience with
ad reps, although we have sold ads ourselves with success. We publish more
online food publications than any other entity, have won awards, were voted
the best foodsite by USA Today, have audiences on both AOL and on the Web (at
foodwine.com) and rack up over a half million visitors per month. We have
gone through 3 ad sales reps to date, all of whom have performed less than
stellarly. In some cases they were individuals, in other cases they were rep
firms. In addition we continue to be listed with WebConnect but they have
been equally ineffective, bringing in only ONE ad in over a year's period.
(They did have another client who wanted to advertise with us though -- it
was a direct competitor so we turned it down. Duh.)
In somewhat of our ad reps' defense, I have also found that food companies
are painfully conservative in their approach to online advertising. Sure,
they may have created corporate websites, but their dollars to drive traffic
to them seem to be quite miserly. The top ad dollars are still being spent by
technology firms, and IMHO are unlikely to share their budgets with cooking
and gardening sites at this moment. Still, internally we have had successes
and were one of the first companies to sell ads on the Web way back in 1994.
We know it can be done, especially now that the Web is coming of age.
Like you, we are looking for a reputable firm that truly delivers. I second
your request for recommendations on truly effective ad sales firms and/or
reps and invite those interested in taking on the eGG to contact me directly.
Thanks,
