Aww Kim, Shame on you. Whether we like it or not, the advertiser
business model will dominate the 'Net in the coming years. Web design
firms will be competing with each other to be the "architect of accord"
for large, corporate sites that have lots of money to spend for their
online presence. Much like ad agencies do today.
You might have heard the most recent story about the fine Web
Development "Agency" BlairLake New Media (http://www.blairlake.com) and
their win of the "Motley Fool" Web account. They put together a public
demonstration of their willingness to win the account by showing up
dressed as clowns and having a Motley Fool website address hidden
somewhere on their person (there's more to this story, but I can't put
my hands on the article). They won the account and some respect from
their peers-- with the full intention of treating the account like an
advertising client.
>From a corporate perspective, in this week's Computerworld, an article
titled "Web spawns techno-marketers"
Mitch Wagner talks about how hard it is to tell the IS managers from the
marketers without a business card.
This article relates mainly to electronic commerce, but the idea is the
same: we as Internet professionals must be able to walk the talk of
advertisers (and marketeers) yet know the technology that defines the
sites. Furthermore, anything we can do to get good quality traffic
(exposure) for our clients is okay.
Best regards,
