ONLINE-ADS>> adspend surveys

I've just finished reading the latest batch of surveys on web adspend.
With figures like only 3% of revenue as barter being bandied about, they
are clearly not yet worth basing success-critical decisions on - which is
a shame.

And counting the value of banners on the big sites wouldn't seem to give
a good overall picture anyway. How will they ever be able to factor in
the weirdos like us? With website ads on cybercafe mousepads and
promotions on public access default screens (web-based), amongst others,
Zapworks is turning over enough to count - yet we're clearly way too far
out there for folk like Jupiter to follow.

And who is counting up the newsletter sponsorship? The push-media
blipverts? The free email service advertising? Let's face it, the
proliferation of new media is hardly going to start getting simpler all
of a sudden.

I'd love to see some numbers on total *net-related* advertising,
factoring in everything from the Alta-Vista blimp to stuff like the
flyposting that American Cybercast undertook in SOMA and Silicon Alley,
before going Chapter 11 on us. Hell, that way the numbers might even
start to look impressive.

Now *there* is a challenge. Anyone up to the task? I hope so.

"And now," cried Max, "let the wild rumpus start!"
