Ryan is right about this. At my site their is a paragraph that explains
what the list is used for ABOVE the subscription form. After people fill in
the form and submit it, they're mailed a confirmation. They must see this
within a day of subscribing, but still some manage to forget that they
subscribed and send me an angry message. It'd be funny if it wasn't such a
pain.

But the reason for this is that everyone with an email address is sick of
receiving spams. There would be a much bigger market for Ryan's service if
spamming wasn't such a problem. No one has a better reason to stamp out
spamming than legitimate marketers. That's why it's important to avoid
connections with companies involved in spamming, like Ryan's suppliers at
savvy.com.

There are many people lobbying for legislation to outlaw spam email in the
same way that fax spamming was a few years ago. If such a law was passed,
even legimate lists might be closed down because a few people (wrongly)
accusing you of spamming would be enough to make operating the list
untenable.
