MESSAGE FROM THE MODERATOR

Hey all -- I have revised guidelines for posts to the list up
at the web site. Please review them when you get a chance.

IN THE NEWS
-----------
`Cookie' proposal could hinder online advertising
Ad Age
http://adage.com/interactive/articles/19970331/article1.html
Well this whole cookie thing is beginning to come to a head.
Ad Age reported this week a new cookie standard issued back
in February by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF).
The tone of the white paper is that users need to have more
control over there cookies to protect privacy. It is frankly
pretty silly. The IETF, fueled by privacy advocates, are
creating this illusion that all sorts of secret and personal
data is being passed through cookies. Truth is all a cookie file
contains is a unique number so the server can recognize you
later. That isn't enough to tell who you actually ARE. Unless
the server has the new "mental telepathy" plug-in, it can't
extract any personal information you don't offer first. I
really hope this doesn't pick up steam.

This article revisits the argument of branding on the web.

Interactive Week

A very interesting article on how robots - programs that
index web sites - can drastically alter access logs. You
might not be getting as many visits as you think!
MODERATOR's RANT

This isn't purely related to online advertising; but since
Cliff started this InterNIC thing and he signs my check I
feel obligated to share a little information about it.
But seriously, it is something we should be aware of.
Katy Winckler (a fellow cheese head -- that's Wisconsinite
for those of you in the dark) was kind enough to share
her company's experience with our friends at the InterNIC:
>Date: Fri, 28 Mar 1997 10:18:15 -0600
>To: owner-online-ads_at_o-a.com
>From: Katy Winckler <katy_at_speck.spectracom.com>
>Subject: Cliff Kurtzman and the InterNic
>
>I was happy to see Cliff's "tirade" this week on the InterNic. As
>developers, we have suffered through the same infuriating madness of having
>our clients' site threatened and actually shut down. This week was the last
>straw.
>
>We created and host a popular site for a major consumer products company.
>The site's domain name was taken off-line by the InterNic this week on the
>false accusation that we had not paid our $50 annual renewal fee. This was
>absolutely ludicrious, as we paid in January, and had a cancelled check
>that InterNic wasted no time in cashing to prove it. In addition, InterNic
>sent an e-mail notice to our technical and billing contacts on March 18
>stating that the plug would be pulled within four days if payment was not
>received, when in reality they pulled the plug on March 20 and the site was
>down for a week while we hashed it out. Trying to contact them is
>impossible - they give generic responses to e-mail, and their voice mail
>system was conveniently "down" this week so we couldn't get anyone on the
>phone. We asked for a formal written explanation for our files and to give
>to our client - I think we'll be lucky to get it.
>
>It appears to be a completely random process - we have had numerous other
>clients notified that their site will be taken down with minimal warning,
>which obviously upsets the client and makes us look bad. Even more
>frustrating in this particular situation was the timing, - the site has
>close ties to current NBA promotions, and we lost a lot of valuable traffic
>in the downtime.
>
>I agree with Cliff that it is time to take action. We are speaking with our
>lawyers at this time. However, if legal avenues prove to be dead ends,
>what can we as developers do to prevent this mistreatment? Getting our
>stories into the industry press might help raise awareness of the problem.
>If other developers have fought against the InterNic and won, I'd love to
>hear from them. Any other feedback would be greatly appreciated.
